Scots stuff minnows to win at last

Kenny Logan drives through the arms of Joao Gomes

Scotland 85-11 Portugal

Scotland waltzed to their first victory at Murrayfield in almost two years, as tiny Portugal were torn apart in a World Cup qualifier.

John Beattie reports (BBC Radio 5 Live)
The home side racked up 13 tries to give their success-starved supporters something to shout about at last.

Centre Jamie Mayer grabbed a hat-trick of tries, while John Leslie, Gregor Townsend and Kenny Logan notched doubles in a hugely one-sided affair against vastly inexperienced opponents.

There were further tries from Gordon Bulloch, Cammy Murray, Eric Peters and Budge Pountney and stand-off Duncan Hodge added 20 points from 10 successful conversions.

But apart from the confidence of finally ending their eight-match losing streak at international level, coach Jim Telfer will have learned little from such a comfortable run-out.

Any hopes of Scotland beating their record score of 89 points, clocked up against the Ivory Coast in the 1995 World Cup, were dashed when they failed to add a 14th try in the dying minutes.

Instead Portugal centre Rohan Hoffman, an Australian with a Scottish grandmother who had already scored a neat drop-goal, finished the scoring with a deserved consolation try for the visitors - a scintillating, length-of-the-field score.
