Storm halts Windies' reply

Brian Lara walks off after being caught lbw

South Africa took a seven-run first innings lead over West Indies, before a thunderstorm brought a premature end to proceedings with the historic first Test intriguingly poised.

Colin Croft: Pitch is not quick enough to have a bowling advantage
When play was abandoned just after tea in Johannesburg, West Indies were 20 without loss in their second innings, Clayton Lambert unbeaten on seven and Philo Wallace 12 not out.

Only 20 minutes of play was possible between lunch and tea as a storm drenched the ground, leaving huge pools of water on the outfield.

South Africa, 217 for six overnight, battled back well in the morning, before being dismissed for 268.

Curtly Ambrose restricted the home side's lead by capturing two for 18 in an eight-over spell.

Big-hitting all-rounder Pat Symcox tried to farm the strike with last man David Terbrugge in, but eventually ran himself out for 25.

Courtney Walsh finished with four for 66, Ambrose took two for 63 and fellow fast bowler Nixon McLean had two for 66.
