Blair supports Malaysia's Anwar

The wife of the former Malaysian deputy prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim, has received a letter of support from the British prime minister, Tony Blair.

The letter, confirmed by Mr Blair's office, said Mr Anwar and his family were in his thoughts, and that the world was watching his trial -- Mr Anwar is facing charges of corruption and sexual misconduct.

The move comes soon after outspoken comments from the American vice president, Al Gore; he described Mr Anwar's supporters as brave reformers for democracy, in a statement which angered the Malaysian authorities.

Meanwhile, Mr Anwar has requested the sacking of two of his prosecutors, saying they tried to obtain false testimony.

A bail request from Mr Anwar has been postponed until next week.
