Bazooka sinks Saints

Carlton Palmer gets a yellow card

Southampton 0-1 Derby

Argentinian Horacio Carbonari fired the Rams to victory against a Saints side crippled by injury.

David Oates reports (BBC Radio 5 Live)
Derby's record signing, nicknamed Bazooka, curled in a 20-yard shot on 33 minutes after Southampton failed to clear a corner.

Carbonari's second goal of the season was enough to secure Derby's third away win and push them back into the top half following last week's setback at home to West Ham.

The Saints, missing 12 senior players, created enough chances in the second half to have won. But poor finishing, desperate defending and keeper Mart Poom's agility kept them out.

Southampton also had two penalty appeals waved away by referee Steve Lodge.

England under-21 international James Beattie wasted Southampton's best chance on 52 minutes, shooting wide after barging through the Derby defence.

The home side's injury problems worsened when winger Stuart Ripley limped off eight minutes before half-time.

Southampton's Moroccan international Hassan Kachloul made a promising Dell debut but he was denied when Estonian Poom saved at his feet.

Jim Smith's side, who also won at the Dell at the end of last season, were again without the injured Igor Stimac and his fellow defenders had a busy afternoon.

At the other end Paulo Wanchope was carefully tracked by Southampton's 19-year-old Gary Monk, also making his debut.

Teams:

Southampton:

Jones, Hiley, Benali, Palmer, Dodd, Monk, Ripley, Oakley, Hughes, Beattie, Kachloul. Subs: Basham, Gibbens, Bridge, Warner, Moss.

Derby:

Poom, Delap, Dorigo, Laursen, Carbonari, Prior, Carsley, Bohinen, Powell, Wanchope, Sturridge. Subs: Schnoor, Eranio, Harper, Burton, Hoult.

Referee: S Lodge (Barnsley)
