Danny boy steps into breach

Mark Kinsella levelled for Charlton with a superb free kick

Charlton 1-2 Everton

Everton shrugged off the departure of Duncan Ferguson with a vital away victory at the Valley.

Steve Wilson reports from the Valley (5 Live)
And it was Ferguson's replacement up front, home-grown youngster Danny Cadamarteri, who did the damage with two goals.

The 19-year-old joined up with the impressive Ibrahima Bakayoko in attack and together they caused numerous problems for the Charlton defence.

Cadamarteri put the Blues ahead in first-half injury time, as he collected Michael Ball's long pass and rounded advancing keeper Sasa Ilic before slotting the ball into an empty net.

And 17 minutes from time he secured victory with a firm drive through a crowded six yard box.

Everton began the game well, although Bakayoko was well wide of the target with his first two efforts on goal - but if his finishing lacked top quality his support play was top-notch.

Charlton, without a win in four games, hit back and could have gone ahead in the last 15 minutes of the first half as they took control of proceedings.

But Andy Hunt headed Chris Powell's free kick against the post with keeper Thomas Myhre well beaten.

Myhre, who had earlier tipped over Neil Redfearn's 30-yard drive, then made stunning saves in quick succession from Mark Kinsella and Shaun Newton and Hunt struck a low drive inches wide.

Once they had gone behind Charlton kept battling and, after Ball missed a penalty for Everton, Kinsella equalised with a brilliant free kick 18 minutes from time.

But Addicks were caught napping just a minute later by Cadamarteri's second.

Clive Mendonca came close to snatching another equaliser - but Everton hung on to win.

Teams:

Charlton: Ilic, Mills, Powell, Redfearn, Rufus, Youds, Kinsella, Hunt, Mendonca, Mortimer, Tiler. Subs: Newton, K. Jones, S. Jones, Barness, Royce.

Everton: Myhre, Ball, Watson, Unsworth, Collins, Hutchison, Short, Grant, Bakayoko, Dunne, Cadamarteri. Subs: Cleland, Materazzi, Oster, Gerrard, Jeffers.

Referee: K Burge (Tonypandy)
