Business: The Markets

Wall Street market report

Friday opening

Shares got off to a strong start after confirmation of press reports that oil giant Exxon is in talks to take over rival Mobil.

At 1433 GMT the Dow Jones was 9.79 points higher at 9310.94.

But the shortened session after Thursday's Thanksgiving Day holiday means many players are absent from the market.

This could prove a limiting factor to any enthusiasm.
