Saturday, November 28, 1998 Published at 11:37 GMT Sport: Rugby Union Greenwood ruled out of Aussie showdown ![]() The loss of Greenwood removes one of England's main weapons England's hopes of recording a shock victory over Australia have suffered a blow after centre Will Greenwood was ruled out of the side for Twickenham.
The late switch is the fifth change to coach Clive Woodward's side after the disappointing victory over Italy last week. "Mike Catt was considered, but I have opted for de Glanville's experience," said Woodward. Captain Lawrence Dallaglio returns to lead the team on Saturday for the first time in seven Tests, after being sidelined by injury. And he admits his side have flattered to deceive in recent seasons and have been written off by many in the southern hemisphere for their failure to beat the best teams in the world.
England lie fifth in the world rankings - the same position as when Dallaglio took the reins last November. "If we are looking to change that ranking and become realistic about the World Cup, then we must start beating the nations above us," Dallaglio said. "Here is our chance - at home against the Wallabies, who are world number two. The revival will have to start now. "There is no point in pretending that we have a genuine World Cup chance and I am not shifting that view until results suggest otherwise. "Australia are hugely powerful and 11 wins from 13 Tests this year is impressive. "They have lost only to South Africa. They have beaten New Zealand away, then France in Paris last week. These are feats which create enormous respect in the England camp." Pack reshuffled to face Aussies Woodward has made sweeping changes to his side after the lacklustre display against Italy.
Tim Rodber comes in for Garath Archer at lock and Richard Hill and Dallaglio return in place of Martin Corry and Ben Clarke in the back row. Australia, who inflicted a record defeat on a hugely under-strength England last summer when they won 76-0, field the same team that beat France 32-21 in Paris last week. But the Wallabies have not been resting on their laurels since that impressive result against the Five Nations champions. They have been devoting a great deal of time to improving their scrum at their base in Surrey after struggling to keep the highly-rated French pack at bay. "I was happy with the way we finished but we certainly were scrappy at the start of the test," prop Andrew Blades admitted.
