At least seven people, including a baby, were reported missing after their boat capsized off the south-eastern Italian port of Brindisi.

Officials said the boat was carrying seventeen people -- believed to be illegal immigrants; but nine of them managed to swim to a nearby oil platform, where they were helped to safety by workers.

Police helicopters and Italian navy vessels are conducting a search operation.
