Russian government officials say doctors are confident that the country's president, Boris Yeltsin, is healthy enough to serve out the remainder of his term.
A presidential spokesman Oleg Sysuyev said Mr Yeltsin was fully capable of carrying out his duties until the year 2000.
President Yeltsin was admitted into hospital earlier this week after suffering from his second bout of pneumonia in two years.
