The Sun newspaper says the plan will be revealed on Friday afternoon. Union leaders are returning from Germany after last-minute top-level talks in Munich with the company's bosses at BMW. The newspaper reports that there will still be 3,000 redundancies at the plant and tough new working practices, but a £2.4bn investment plan has been safeguarded. It says hourly wages and bonuses will be replaced by annual salaries and extra hours worked will be repaid as holiday. But unions are reported to have won a cut in the working week from 37 to 35 hours. Deadline approaches Any deal will come just in time as the company has set a deadline of Monday 30 November for reaching an agreement on jobs and working practices.
Rover's owners BMW said the firm's domestic and export markets were being hit by the strength of sterling. Chief union negotiator Tony Woodley of the Transport & General Workers' Union said the negotiations were the toughest he had ever been involved in. Any deal will have to be put to Rover's 39,000 workers. The company is aiming to achieve annual savings of £150m. |
