ECOMOG force for Bissau

A total of one-thousand-four-hundred-and-fifty troops from the West African peacekeeping force ECOMOG are to take part in a peace mission in Guinea Bissau.

A statement from the regional body ECOWAS said the troops, from Niger, Togo, Benin and Gambia, will be under the command of the ECOMOG field commander.

The force is meant to guarantee security along Bissau's border with Senegal as agreed in a peace deal earlier this month between the President of Bissau, Joao Bernardo Viera, and the rebel leader, General Ansoumane Mane.
