Police in Chile have arrested more than sixty people during violent demonstrations by supporters and opponents of General Augusto Pinochet in several cities.

In the capital, Santiago, most of the violence took place outside the Spanish and British embassies, where pro-Pinochet supporters tried to break through police cordons.

The Chilean president, Eduardo Frei, met with the country's national security council and received the support of the armed forces for his approach.
