Singapore former detainee urges repeal of security act

A former political prisoner in Singapore, Chia Thye Poh, has called on the government to repeal its internal security act which allows for indefinite detention without trial.

Mr Chia was speaking after the authorities announced they were lifting all remaining restrictions on his movement, thirty-two years after he was arrested and detained without trial for belonging to a radical left-wing group.

The Home Affairs ministry said he would be firmly dealt with should he once again become involved in activities prejudicial to national security.

The act was introduced by Britain in the days of colonial rule to combat communist guerrillas.
