Thursday, November 26, 1998 Published at 13:48 GMT World: Americas Pioneering TV comic dies age 64 ![]() US comic Flip Wilson, who made American television history by becoming the first black comedian to successfully host his own variety series, has died of liver cancer at the age 64. Born Clerow Wilson in New Jersey, he earned the nickname "Flip" when he performed comedy shows in the Air Force, and was host of the The Flip Wilson Show on NBC from 1970 to 1974. He was best known for his impressions of the Reverend Leroy of the Church of What's Happening Now and as the sassy Geraldine, one of TV's most successful drag acts whose catchphrase - The Devil Made Me Do it - became part of the language. He is survived by sons Kevin and David, and daughters Stacey, Tamara and Michelle. |
