The company could not find buyers for either the plant in Oswestry, Shropshire or in Helmond in the Netherlands. The company will also downsize its operations in two other facilities, and integrate operations at other plants. Laura Ashley said in January that it would close the plants unless buyers could be found. There are 73 employees on the Oswestry site and 71 in Helmond. The cost of closures and redundancies will cost Laura Ashley £9m. "The year-end provision of £9m taken for manufacturing operations, is sufficient to cover redundancy payments and other costs associated with the closure of these facilities," the company said in a statement. The closures will be subject to consultation with employees via an elected consultative committee in Wales and the Workers' Council in Holland. "Wherever possible, we will attempt to re-deploy workers from these factories within the business," the company said. Last month, Laura Ashley revealed a 20% slump in sales and a fall in half-year profits. The company posted a £25.5m loss in annual profits last year. Heads roll In August, the company's recovery plan signalled the departure of Chief Executive David Hoare and Finance Director Richard Pennycook. Some 20% of staff at the group's international head office were also asked to leave. Laura Ashley was one of Britain's retail success stories of the 1970s and 1980s, with its flowery cotton frocks and fabrics popular around the world. |
