A leading Iranian dissident cleric, Ayatullah Hosienali Montazeri, who is under house arrest, has joined in the condemnation of the killing of the Iranian opposition leader, Dariush Foruhar and his wife in Tehran, last weekend.

Mr Montazeri warned President Khatami that if the criminals were not brought to justice the country would plunge into chaos and lawlessness.

Thousands of people attended the funerals earlier today, some chanting anti-government slogans.

Police say they have arrested a number of suspects in connection with the killings.
