US criticises Indonesian forces for riot deaths

The United States has criticised the Indonesian security forces following the violent clashes with students earlier this month in which fourteen demonstrators were killed.

A State Department spokesman said the security forces clearly used excessive force against unarmed demonstrators, and called for those responsible to be brought to justice.

With Indonesia moving through a difficult period of reform, the spokesman said the government should respect the freedom of speech and assembly.
