Joy and anger at Pinochet ruling


Police in the Chilean capital, Santiago, have used tear gas and water cannon to disperse separate demonstrations by supporters and opponents of General Pinochet.

More than forty people were arrested.

Outside the Spanish and British embassies, pro-Pinochet crowds threw rocks and eggs, and tried to break through the police cordons.

The BBC correspondent in Chile says the General's supporters are a powerful minority and are now putting increasing pressure on the Chilean government to resolve the situation.

In Spain where human rights groups have been investigating crimes committed in Chile under General Pinochetthousands celebrated for several hours in the centre of Madrid.
