Fourth teachers' union to join TUC

Fewer than 25% of the union's members submitted valid votes

A fourth UK classroom teaching union has voted to affiliate to the Trades Union Congress.

In a ballot conducted earlier this month by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, more than seven out of 10 members who voted approved the move.

But just 26,866 of the 112,159 members balloted submitted valid votes - of whom 19,291 approved affiliation.

The ATL will join the National Union of Teachers, the National Association of Schoolmasters/Union of Women Teachers, and the Educational Institute of Scotland in becoming members of the TUC.

The ballot result endorses a decision taken by the union's last annual conference.

The ATL's General Secretary, Peter Smith, said: "The decision to ballot members has been fully justified.

"A substantial majority of those who voted are for affiliation."
