UN condemns arms sales to Rwandan genocidists

The United Nations Security Council has urged governments to tighten controls on the flow of arms to former Rwandan government forces and Interahamwe militia who were involved in the 1994 genocide.

Such weapons sales are illegal under a UN arms embargo.

The Council was responding to a report which said the Rwandan fighters, who had been scattered throughout Central Africa, were now converging in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The report also said it was shocking that the fighters had achieved a form of legitimacy as part of the forces supporting the Congolese government.

And it said they were smuggling drugs into Africa to finance their arms purchases.
