An anonymous tip-off included allegations about an Arsenal-Southampton match which ended in a 1-1 draw last month. But a police spokeswoman said that no evidence had been found so far to substantiate the claim. "An anonymous allegation concerning a Premier League football match was received by the Metropolitan Police," she said. "Preliminary inquiries were conducted but it has not been established if there is any basis for a formal investigation. "This matter remains under consideration, but it is thought no further inquiries will be made in the absence of any further information." Allegations of match-fixing and other corrupt financial practices have dented football's reputation in recent years. Last year players Hans Segers, John Fashanu and Bruce Grobbelaar were cleared of criminal charges of match fixing. The Football Association later gave Segers and Grobbelaar suspended bans for breaking its rules banning players from gambling on match results. |
