Swiss slap UN style sanctions on UNITA

Switzerland has imposed sanctions on the opposition UNITA movement in Angola -- bringing it into line with the United Nations, to which it does not belong.

The sanctions include a freeze on UNITA assets and a ban on the movement's diamond trade.

The UN adopted its sanctions in June, saying UNITA had broken the Lusaka peace accord it signed with the government in 1994.

The UN secretary-general Kofi Annan's latest report on Angola said prospects for peace were bleak and preparations for a military showdown were continuing.
