Wednesday, November 25, 1998 Published at 01:48 GMT World: Americas Kidnap of Spaniards in Chile a "joke" Confusion surrounds the whereabouts of two Spaniards in Chile, following reports and subesequent denials that they had been kidnapped by supporters of General Pinochet. The two, a father and daughter, sent an e-mail message to their family, saying they were being held by people angry with Spain for requesting the General's extradition. However, a Chilean senator who broke the initial news, Sergio Bitar, has now told Chilean television that the alleged victims had called their relatives to say it was a joke. Chilean police are still investigating the case. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
