Lewis and Holyfield sign for $30m

Its' On: Holyfield and promoter Don King

Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield finally both have put pen to paper in New York to seal their undisputed world heavyweight championship clash at Madison Square Garden on March 13.

The move appears to end fears that contractual problems would prevent the much-vaunted bout from going ahead.

The fight for Lewis' WBC title and WBA and IBF belts held by Holyfield was first mooted after Holyfield's second victory over Mike Tyson in June 1997.

Lewis signed last December in Miami, but Holyfield did not put his name to the document because negotiations between his promoter Don King and Home Box Office, the American television company behind Lewis, collapsed.

The two fighters will attend a press conference on Monday at Madison Square Garden, where Joe Frazier beat Mohammed Ali in 1971 in a battle billed as the Fight of the Century.

Frazier and Ali have been invited to the conference, which will herald an eight-city tour, including Washington DC, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco, by the two champions to publicise the contest.

Holyfield, 36, will receive $20m, while London-born Lewis, 33, will pocket $10m.

Lewis' manager Frank Maloney said: "We are all very pleased and just waiting to go to work. It's time for Lennox to bring the titles to Britain."
