Belgium says Kabila immune from prosecution

A justice ministry official in Belgium has said President Kabila of the Democratic Republic of Congo has diplomatic immunity because Brussels recognises the Congolese government.

A Congolese official in Brussels asked for assurances of immunity from prosecution before Mr Kabila's visit there today.

The move followed a law suit filed against Mr Kabila by Congolese opposition representatives in Brussels.

They want him tried for alleged genocide and crimes against international law.

Earlier today Mr Kabila met the Pope in a brief private meeting at the Vatican.
