Saints agree Barnard swap

Darren Barnard challenges Jamaica's Paul Hall

Welsh international Darren Barnard is poised to join Southampton in a swap deal which will see former England midfielder Carlton Palmer signing for First Division Barnsley.

Wing-back Barnard is valued at £1.9m by the Yorkshire club, and Saints have agreed to pay £400,000 in addition to parting with the £1.5m-rated Palmer.

Barnard cost Barnsley £750,000 when they signed him from Bristol City last year and scored the winner in last Saturday's surprise 3-2 victory over Sunderland.

The swap deal was proposed after Barnsley boss John Hendrie made an approach for Palmer, who will be 33 next month.

He plans to use the money to help fund a £750,000 move for unsettled Aberdeen forward Craig Hignett.
