Detective cleared over expenses claims

Ray Mallon's career has been a controversial one

The head of Middlesbrough CID, suspended nearly a year ago, has been cleared of fiddling his expenses.

Cleveland Police said on Monday that they would be taking no further action over allegations concerning Mr Detective Superintendent Ray Mallon's expenses.

Mr Mallon introduced a "zero-tolerance" policy which achieved national publicity, attracting support and criticism at the same time.

A spokesperson said: "Following an internal inquiry ... a report has been forwarded to the Deputy Chief Constable.

"He has considered the file in detail and as a result, Mr Mallon has been given appropriate advice in the submission of expenses claims and the proper keeping of police notebooks.

"No further action will be taken in respect of this issue. The matter is now closed."

In a separate investigation, Mr Mallon was also accused of passing information to the press and "alleged activity which could be construed as criminal".

Almost a year on from being relieved of his duties Mr Mallon has still not been interviewed over the two allegations which led to his suspension.

The investigation into corruption in the Cleveland Force, known as Operation Lancet, was launched after allegations that CID officers gave drugs to criminals in exchange for confessions.
