MacGill axed by Aussies

Stuart MacGill appeals for lbw in the Brisbane Test

Australia have dropped leg-spinner Stuart MacGill despite his three wickets on the final day of the drawn first Test against England.

The selectors have called up versatile Tasmanian Colin Miller, who made his international debut on Australia's recent tour to Pakistan.

The second Test starts in Perth on Saturday and Australia are likely to go into the match with four seam bowlers on what is traditionally a fast wicket.

Miller can bowl medium pace and off-spin and will offer variety to captain Mark Taylor, who said that MacGill was better off playing in a Sheffield Shield match for New South Wales than filling the 12th man role for the Test.

"What we have done in the last 12 months is pick horses for courses. It has worked for us. The feeling is that Perth suits fast men, so let's go with them," said Taylor.

MacGill may return for the third Test in Adelaide from December 11-15, unless Shane Warne feels he is ready to return to the side by then following surgery on his shoulder.

The Australian 12 is:

M Taylor (captain), M Slater, J Langer, M Waugh, S Waugh, R Ponting, I Healy, D Fleming, M Kasprowicz, C Miller, G McGrath, J Gillespie.
