Tuesday, November 24, 1998 Published at 03:48 GMT World: Americas Mexican police arrest police A series of raids in Mexico has led to the detention of around two-hundred police officers and security guards suspected of corruption. So far, more than eighty officers have been charged with crimes ranging from running protection rackets and staging bank robberies to murder. The majority of those arrested belong to Mexico city's banking and auxiliary police, whose duties include routine investigations and patrols. The BBC Mexico correspondent says the arrests will come as no surprise to local people, who regard the police as simply the best organised of the city's criminal gangs.
