Shares improved on Friday's gains, with fresh improvements linked to a spate of merger activity.
A few minutes after the start of trade, the Dow Jones was 46.6 points higher at 9206.15.
Feverish speculation led Deutsche Bank and Bankers Trust to announce they were in takeover talks which were at an advanced stage.
Netscape Communications, meanwhile, confirmed it was in merger talks with America Online.
The Nasdaq composite was up11.52 at 1939.73.
