Van Hooijdonk price too high

Van Hooijdonk - an uneasy alliance with his Forest teammates

Leeds United have abandoned their interest in Dutch striker Pierre van Hooijdonk after being quoted a £6m price by Nottingham Forest.

Manager David O'Leary was willing to pay up to £4m but said: "The deal is dead now."

He has been seeking to increase his attacking options since taking over at Elland Road last month and was hoping to pair van Hooijdonk with fellow Dutchman Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

Forest boss Dave Bassett remains eager to sell van Hooijdonk, who recently ended a one-man strike after missing the start of the season.

"I made an inquiry. I was prepared to take a chance on him, but not at the £6m we were quoted," O'Leary added.
