Music giant in merger talks

EMI, the UK's largest music group with stars such as the Spice Girls, has held talks with Bertelsmann, the German media giant about a possible tie-up between the two groups.

A merger between EMI and Bertelsmann would create one of the largest music empires in the world.

EMI has been the subject of intense merger speculation following a slump in its profit and share price and uncertainty over the future management of the group.

EMI confirmed there was an informal meeting one month ago between senior executives of EMI and Bertelsmann to discuss possible opportunities for co-operation between the two music businesses.

However the group said that it had not held talks with Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation in response to a story in the Los Angeles Times.
