The Kremlin says President Boris Yeltsin has been admitted to hospital, suffering from pneumonia.
A spokesman said a planned meeting with the visiting Chinese president, Jiang Zemin, would take place at the hospital.
Russian officials were quoted as saying Mr Yeltsin was admitted after developing a high temperature on Sunday, and was being treated with antibiotics.
It's the latest health scare surrounding the Russian leader: in October, he had to cut short a visit to Central Asia and doctors later ordered him to rest, saying he was suffering from nervous exhaustion.
