Grandparents collect crash orphan
Eastwood family
Cecily Eastwood was the sole-survivor of the family
The grandparents of a Stoke-on-Trent girl left orphaned after a car crash during their Spanish holiday are collecting her from hospital on Friday.

Cecily Eastwood, aged 22-months, lost her father Nigel, mother Rebecca and seven-year-old brother Alexander, in the crash on Wednesday.

The toddler has been treated in hospital for a broken leg.

Police are questioning a motorist about the crash in the Galicia region of north-west Spain.

It's bad enough to lose one child, but to lose two children and a grandchild is horrific

Hammy Armstrong, Cecily's grandfather

Hospital consultant Dr Eastwood, 40, and his 37-year-old wife, of Hartnell Lane, Rough Close, were on a family holiday when the accident happened at Sanxenxo.

Cecily has been left without any of her family, while being cared for at Pontevedra hospital.

Mrs Eastwood's father, Hammy Armstrong, 61, from Rutland, said before leaving for Spain: "We are devastated. They were a young well-educated couple, and a lovely family and all of that is gone now.

Guardianship

"I feel absolutely devastated. It's bad enough to lose one child but to lose two children and a grandchild is horrific.

"I considered Nigel my child as well as Rebecca."

He said guardianship of Cecily still had to be arranged.

"In the meantime, she will be looked after by my other daughter who is from the Cambridge area," he said.

'Fabulous holiday'

Cecily's godmother Joanne Hirst, from Worsley, Greater Manchester, said she was still in "disbelief" about what had happened.

"We had spoken to them on Tuesday and they were having a fabulous holiday and suddenly they're not here any more."

She said the family had been due to return on Saturday.

Dr Nigel Eastwood was a consultant anaesthetist at North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary.

Car overtaking

He had been due to start work part-time for Keele University's School of Medicine in September.

A Spanish police spokesman said the crash appeared to have been caused by a car, which was overtaking.

A spokesman for the Guardia Civil said on Friday morning that a motorist had been arrested but gave no further details.

A man and a woman from Barcelona were also killed in the crash and a man and woman from Tarragona were seriously injured.

None of the occupants of two other cars involved in the accident were seriously injured.
