Progress in hospital strike talks
Striking workers
Union members picketed the Glasgow hospital
Hopes are rising for an end to a pay dispute which led to strike action at a Glasgow hospital.

The 48-hour stoppage involved about 300 domestic and cleaning staff at Glasgow Royal Infirmary on Tuesday and Wednesday.

They are seeking a £1,000 pay rise from French company Sodexho, the private firm which has the contract for the services.

Three days of strike action are threatened for next week unless there is an agreement.

More strikes

On Friday, union negotiators said some progress had been made and it is likely a new offer from Sodexho will be put to the 300 porters, cleaners and catering staff on Monday.

They have been fighting for a basic wage of £5 an hour plus a return to NHS conditions on holidays, sick pay, shift allowances and pensions.

Sodexho was forced to draft in 60 extra staff on Tuesday and Wednesday to keep services going.

The company is hoping that the new offer will be enough to head off more strikes at the Royal and stem the tide of ancillary services returning to the NHS.
