E.coli found in paddling pool
Markeaton Park
Markeaton Park is popular with young families
A children's paddling pool at Derby's busiest park has been sealed off after traces of the dangerous E.coli bacteria were found in the water.

The contamination of the pool at Markeaton Park was found during a routine inspection on Tuesday.

Tests are being carried out to discover which strain of the bacteria it is but it is not thought to be virulent.

Council bosses say they want to re-open the pool in time for the weekend and an environmental festival which is being held at the park.

Chlorine problems

Parents whose children have used the pool recently have been asked to look out for any symptons of E.coli such as vomiting or diarhorrea but risks are not thought to be high.

The bug was found after a weekly test at the pool.

It was closed last month due to problems with the chlorine supply, which should prevent the bacteria occurring.

Carol Mee, spokeswoman for Derby City Council, said: "We would advise people if they were using the pool to keep an eye out for symptoms but the health authority have said they don't think it is a particularly virulent strain."

She said the pool had been drained and disinfected and will be re-filled.

"We are hoping to have it open in time for the weekend and Eco-Fest and what might be nice weather on Saturday afternoon."
