Police officers arrested on drugs charges

Three Liverpool police officers have been suspended from duty after being arrested on suspicion of possessing drugs.

The officers, two from the Merseyside force and a third from the Port of Liverpool police, were stopped at 1600 BST on Saturday on the M6 at Knutsford in Cheshire.

The officers are a 23-year-old man from Crosby, Merseyside; a 28-year-old man from Kensington, Liverpool and a 34-year-old woman from Little Neston, on the Wirral.

They were questioned by police at Knutsford after their arrest.

Investigations continue

Both forces have admitted that their officers are under investigation.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside constabulary said: "Two Merseyside Police officers have been suspended after being arrested and pending an investigation by Cheshire Police into possession of a controlled drug."

Port of Liverpool Authority spokesman Eric Leatherbarrow said: "It is correct that a Port of Liverpool Police officer is under investigation by Cheshire Police and has been suspended from duty pending further inquiries."

The three have been released on bail until 25 September.
