Paddy Tipping

Date of birth

24 October 1949

Political profile

Paddy Tipping was returned to the backbenches in the reshuffle which followed the 2001 election.

He had worked for two years as deputy leader of the House of Commons and had previously been PPS to Jack Straw.

He had always been one of the less Blairite members of the government, evinced both by his beard and his mild criticism of the government's energy policy, calling for more overt help for the coal mining communities of his constituency.

A former social worker and regeneration co-ordinator, he is very constituency focused and since his departure from government has been a very active backbencher, firing questions at ministers about the needs of his local industries.

He is also a keen environmentalist and is a leading member of the Ramblers' Association.

Since his first election to the Commons in 1992, he made several attempts to introduce a "right to roam" before it was effected by the government.
