Helen Jackson

Date of birth

19 May 1939

Political profile

A veteran campaigner against poverty through local government and various pressure groups, Helen Jackson entered the Commons in 1992 after a career as a special needs teacher.

She has not held any frontbench positions, although she served as a PPS to successive secretaries of state for Northern Ireland throughout the 1997 Parliament.

In 2001, she joined the Commons transport sub-committee.

She is on the left of the party's mainstream and is a particular critic of the rail industry and the service it delivers to her constituency.

She also has a strong interest in and detailed knowledge of, the water industry.

She is a senior figure in Labour's "behind the scenes" administration - she sits on the party's National Executive Committee, on the National Policy Forum and on the Parliamentary Labour Party's Backbench Committee.
