Richard Allan

Date of birth

11 February 1966

Political profile

Richard Allan was one of the younger members of the large intake of new Lib Dem MPs in 1997.

At that time he was regarded as an up-and-coming party star.

A former archaeologist, who became an information technology manager, Mr Allan was appointed chairman of the Commons information select committee which oversees technology provision for the Houses of Parliament.

He continues to sit on the committee, though he no longer chairs it since he is now the Lib Dem spokesman for the Cabinet Office.

He is on the left of the party and is a patron to or member of a wide range of environmental and civil liberties groups.

In the 1999 Liberal Democrat leadership election, he supported the bid of former Taunton MP Jackie Ballard.

He has announced that he will step down from parliament at the next general election.
