John Grogan

Date of birth

24 February 1961

Political profile

John Grogan achieved a remarkable result in being twice elected as a Labour MP in the former Conservative heartland of Selby.

He is a quintessential New Labour moderniser and formerly worked as a Labour press officer in the European Parliament and as a local government officer.

He is also a member of the Fabian Society and the Institute for Public Policy Research.

Since his election in 1997, he has established himself as an active Parliamentarian, with a substantial clutch of tabled EDMs.

He has carved himself, through repeated attention, a few idiosyncratic niches - with a constituency brewery in mind he has pursued reductions in beer duty and the extension of licensing hours.

He has also become the Commons' leading campaigner on securing wider access to televised sports events.
