Elliot Morley

Date of birth

6 July 1952

Political profile

Elliot Morley has had one of the most consistent political careers in recent history.

Soon after his first election in 1987, he began to serve on the Commons agriculture select committee.

After two years he became one of Labour's spokesmen on agricultural affairs and animal welfare, a post he held until the party came to power in 1997 when he became an under-secretary at MAFF.

Following that department's dissolution in 2001, he continues his ministerial career at the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

And in the June 2003 reshuffle he replaced Michael Meacher as minister for the environment.

Mr Morley is an acknowledged expert on animal welfare issues and particularly on birds.

He had argued for many years in opposition for restrictions on fur farming which he was able to implement in government and is also an opponent of hunting.
