Andrew George

Date of birth

2 December 1958

Political profile

Even in a House of Commons packed to the rafters with MPs declaring their love for their constituencies, Andrew George stands out as a local MP.

In his maiden speech he became the first MP to speak Cornish in the Commons.

As might be expected of a former member of Mebyon Kernow, the Cornish nationalist party, he is strongly in favour of regional devolution and official recognition of the Cornish language.

His wider political interests also relate to his constituency; he is a strong campaigner for reform of the Common Fisheries Policy and the Common Agricultural Policy.

He also works to secure EU finding for Cornwall, drawing on his former professional life as a rural development worker.

He has been a social security spokesman for the Lib Dems and parliamentary private secretary to Charles Kennedy.

Now he speaks for the party on agricultural and food issues.
