Sir Alan Haselhurst

Date of birth

23 June 1937

Political profile

Sir Alan Haselhurst is a long serving MP, who was first elected to the Commons in 1970, although he was out of Parliament between 1974 and 1977.

He is an articulate and intelligent speaker, but never advanced very far in the ranks of the Conservative Party.

He is on the social and economic left of the party: he is pro-choice and opposed to capital punishment and is pro-European.

He supported Ken Clarke's bid for the Conservative leadership in 1997.

Since 1997, however, his views have received less of a public airing after his appointment as a Commons Deputy Speaker, a traditionally non speaking or voting role.

Besides continuing to pursue constituency casework, he has written two well reviewed books of comic fiction based on his beloved game of cricket.
