John Greenway

Date of birth

15 February 1946

Political profile

Like many of his fellow Conservative MPs, John Greenway has a strong interest in and robust attitude towards, law and order.

Having served for five years as a police officer, he has consistently advocated the return of the death penalty and it was his amendment to a Criminal Justice Bill which led to the introduction of private prisons.

He has also worked in the insurance market as a broker and a journalist and speaks with expertise on the subject.

He remained on the backbenches from his election in 1987 until the Conservative Party entered opposition, when he became a junior home affairs spokesman and latterly, served as tourism spokesman.

Although he is a Eurosceptic and a member of the Bruges Group, he is not overly partisan and was an early supporter of Ken Clarke's bid for the Tory leadership in 2001, seconding his formal nomination.

He became a sports spokesman and has a particular interest in racing.
