Political profile

Philip Hammond has risen quickly in the ranks of the Conservative Party since his first election in 1997.

His background as a director of companies supplying medical equipment made him a knowledgeable addition to the health team.

In 2001, he became a trade and industry spokesman. On this portfolio, he is less partisan and more pragmatic than many opposition spokesmen and consequently made some successful sallies against the government.

In summer 2002, he went to shadow the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and local government department.

He is an intelligent and articulate speaker and a member of the mainstream Bow Group.

He attracted enormous controversy when he claimed that female doctors were "less productive" than their male counterparts.

He was a supporter of Michael Portillo's bid for the Conservative leadership in 2001.
