Andy King
Date of birth 14 September 1948 Political profile Andy King was one of Labour's most unexpected winners in 1997 and managed to hold his seat with an increased majority in 2001. He was helped initially by a high local profile as a long serving councillor and chair of the social services committee. He built further on this in his first term by making local issues the focus of his work as an MP; this has included opposing the government on some matters, such as proposals to site a GM trial crop in his constituency. He does not have a particularly high profile in the Commons; he sits on the Commons deregulation select committee and also contributes on issues of poverty and social exclusion. He has also run a campaign against "carpetbaggers" seeking to demutualise building societies. Contact kinga@parliament.uk Constituency office 01788 575504
