Kevin Barron
Date of birth 26 October 1946 Political profile Kevin Barron is a former miner who has sat for the safe Labour seat of Rother Valley since 1983. He was sponsored by the NUM and had assisted Arthur Scargill's campaign for the presidency of the union. He resigned from the Campaign Group in 1985 and became PPS to Neil Kinnock, embarking on a career as a Labour moderniser. This conversion eventually saw him spearheading the New Clause IV Campaign - and ultimately being expelled from the NUM for disloyalty. He was a frontbench spokesman for many years in opposition, latterly on health, but was left out of the government. He has recently been an active backbench campaigner on health issues, with a pro-choice stance on abortion, but most especially on smoking - he has for a long time argued for a ban on tobacco advertising.
