Janet Anderson

Date of birth

6 December 1949

Political profile

Janet Anderson was a Department of Culture Minister in the last Parliament and in the reshuffle following the 2001 election, suffered the same fate as the rest of that department's ministers - with a return to the backbenches.

It was a surprising move for an MP who proved to be a reliable Blairite despite a left-wing past as chair of the Tribune Group.

She is also very close to Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, for whom she worked as a PA for eight years.

First elected in 1992, she is a mainstream feminist moderniser and a strong supporter of electoral reform.
