Nigel Evans
Date of birth 10 November 1957 Political profile From 1997 to 2003, Nigel Evans was the Conservatives' Welsh Affairs spokesman. He resigned, and returned to the backbenches, when Michael Howard announced that his Shadow Cabinet would be slimmed down to twelve, thus excluding the position of Shadow Welsh Secretary. Although he does not sit for a Welsh seat, he originally comes from Swansea, where he managed his family's newsagent business. His Welsh credentials are further helped by the fact that, unlike most Conservatives, he has a background in local government, having served on West Glamorgan County Council. He entered the Commons in 1992 and quickly became a parliamentary private secretary, working for William Hague for two years during his time as Secretary of State for Wales. He is a Eurosceptic, who was one of the earliest MPs to start campaigning against the prospect of a single currency; and also a particular campaigner against drugs. He is one of the most ebullient members of the Tory frontbench and is a frequent and noisy attendee of the Commons chamber. Contact www.nigelmp.com Constituency office 01200 425939
